International Experience Canada

If you plan to travel to Canada temporarily for an internship, work, or study, you will need to apply for a visa.

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers possibilities specifically designed for young people. If you’re between 18 and 30/35 years old (depending on your citizenship), you may qualify for this exciting opportunity.

Since there is a limited number of spots available, it’s important to register and submit a profile early. The program typically opens in December or January every year. The IEC program includes three different types of visas, each with its own benefits, which are explained below.

Please note that the availability of these visa categories varies by country, and factors like age, visa duration, and the number of work permits available depend on your citizenship.

Working Holiday Canada – Open work permit

With a Working Holiday work permit, you can participate in both paid and unpaid internships, work for multiple employers, and study in Canada for up to six months. You’re not required to work the entire time, so you can also take the opportunity to explore and travel across Canada. This visa offers flexibility, allowing you to balance work, study, and travel during your stay.

Young Professional Canada – Employer-specific work permit

With an approved Young Professional work permit, you are permitted to work for a specific employer in Canada. This employer must offer you a temporary job and pay a compliance fee of CAD $230. This employer-specific work permit, requires the position and salary to meet certain criteria set by Immigration Canada. There are additional requirements that have to be met.

International Co-op Internship Canada

The International Co-op internship work permit is specifically for students who wish to do their internship in Canada. This means that you must be studying and registered in a program at a University, college or trade school when applying for this visa. Furthermore, your internship should be directly linked to your field of studies.
